The Warn M8000 Winch is a great winch. I work’s every time that it is needed. I chose the Warn because I wanted a Winch that no matter what always worked and all the articles said it always worked. It also has a very strong reputation. It is an older model than the new Zenon’s but I wanted one that has been well tested. The install is very straight forward and everything is in the box. The second time was a little easier do to the fact more room on an aftermarket bumper. The power wires are plenty long enough and have options on how to mount the control panel, straight off to one side and like I chose tilted in center. The base uses 4 bolts with locknuts that is keyed to the winches feet, comes with a roller fairlead. The newer version of the control box has 4 drain holes in the corners, I chose tilted because I know two holes will drain well. I have replaced the steal cable with synthetic, easy switch over.
Price…price ..price.. The only other issue is the constant question of why did you spend that much on a winch, my $200 one worked fine. I do wish the control wires were like 2 inches longer just to make them even neater. But unless you have OCD and want HIDE all wires it works fine. The older control boxes do not drain well, that’s why the new drain holes and if submerged the solenoids go out. The new boxes drain great and have had no issues, do carry extra solenoids just in case.
Overall, do you want a winch that works every time that you need or do you want to save a few hundred and it work most of the time? I knew I would use my winch a lot so I wanted it to work every time I asked of it. There is a brotherhood that goes with a Warn you’re in the family for LIFE hard to kill one, how many of those old Warn you see work. To make the price a little better Warn does a lot of rebates that give free recovery bags a $100 value. I got mine during one of these and was great bag full of recovery gear.
