Buying new shoes always seems like a hassle and for daily life a necessity. However, buying new shoes for your Jeep can be an overwhelming, time consuming, expensive process that is balanced with excitement and relief when they finally arrive. That is exactly how the process went over the last few months of trying to decide which shoes (tires) to order for Project JKU. After months of back and forth, a social survey and examining nearly every Jeep I saw, I decided to go with the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 sized at 315/70/R17 (35’s on a 17″ wheel).
I changed directions on the tires I wanted for a few reasons. I currently am running Pro Comp MTZ’s and have been fairly happy, but not completely satisfied. The Pro Comps are a mud tire and honestly, I don’t off-road nearly enough to go with another set. One of the reasons I invested in them was for the more rugged look and quickly found that was a mistake as they did NOT wear on the highway very well at all. I got over the sound noise, but the cupping was horrible and created a wobble and uneven shake on stopping.
Therefore, I decided to go with a more traditional tire in the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 that could support the daily drive on the highway, and provide the grip necessary for some light to moderate off-road trails. Additionally, the road noise will be significantly reduced with the all-terrain tire tread as opposed to the mud tire tread. Lastly, the wear of the tread over time should be much more consistent and not present the cupping that occurred on the MTZ’s.
I am definitely excited about getting the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2’s installed, and was excited when they arrived. I ordered them from ExtremeTerrain.com and they shipped same day and arrived 2 days later. As you can see below, they came in boxes. That was unusual from my perspective as I’ve never seen tired delivered in boxes, but happy nonetheless.
Update December 27, 2017: I have the tires mounted and balanced and immediately the difference was clear. Honestly, riding in the Jeep is like a whole new experience. The tires are extremely quiet to the point that I’m hearing all the other noises my Jeep makes. Additionally, it was really windy and wet the last couple of days so I tested out the breaking. The BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2’s didn’t disappoint. The Jeep stopped with no hydroplaning.
I will continue to update this post over time with updates further details of the testing of the BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 so please check back for new details.
