WOW! The AMP RESEARCH POWERSTEP is an amazing MOD! Ok, now that I have that out there and if you chose to continue reading I will tell you more.
The AMP RESEARCH POWERSTEP showed up well packaged and divided up into 3 boxes and the steps themselves wrapped tightly to avoid scrapes, dents and damage. Each box was identified with a label to ensure the instructions were accurately followed.
Once we were able to open up the packaging, we found the steps, driver & passenger side motor linkage, idle linkage, motors plus covers, controller, wiring harness and finally all the hardware. The first think I noticed was how light the steps were, but also how solid the linkage mounts were. They are quality built and designed nicely to ensure full extension and tight retraction next to the body of the Jeep.
I would recommend having at least 2 people for the install as it will go much faster and smoother as the need to hold parts in place for measurement, drilling and alignment. You’ll notice I mentioned drilling, and that is because of the way the holes and linkage align on the back mounts. You will need to drill a 3/8 hole after the adapter is installed and linkage is aligned. Once drilled, it is best to get a file and clean up the drill hole, which is relatively easy and shouldn’t deter you from considering the POWERSTEPS.
Once the rear mounts are installed the assembly of the front linkage and motor is seamless. I would recommend install with the linkage extended to keep room for tightening bolts prior to wiring being completed.
Once all that is done, you can install the steps and tighten down the bolts around all areas. Next, you will want to pop the hood and run the wiring down the specific sides under the Jeep and begin ensuring the wires are tucked away and you have a plan for where and how to zip-tie everything. Once that is completed the wiring and motor is a plug-n-play and easily covered with the motor covers. I would recommend stripping the light wires before running and mounting the lights. The interior wiring is great with the connectors they provide and easily installed.
Once you have everything run it is just a clean up exercise to ensure you are satisfied with placement of the wiring and controller. The install took about 5 hours total and happy to have had help.
Overall, I’m extremely pleased with the AMP RESEARCH POWERSTEP and although the cost is steep at $1,200 the durability, look, and construction of all aspects of these steps. If you have a jacked up Jeep and want to help out those that are shorter and smaller than you with getting into your rig, than these are a great MOD. They activate quickly when the door is opened, and have 2 second delay upon closing the door. One of the nice features is that when one side of the Jeep opens a door all lights on both sides come one to help visibility at night! VERY COOL! Additionally, I even saw an increase in gas milage when I unloaded my heavy SMITTYBILT SIDE STEPS and now have these POWERSTEPS tucked tightly up to the body of my Jeep.
THESE ARE A MUST BUY!!!!!
