The newfound rivalry between the Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco is heating up. Jeep announced that it was stuffing a 470-hp 6.4-liter V-8 into the Wrangler on the same day Ford revealed the 2021 Bronco, and more recently, Jeep added an available Xtreme Recon package that adds 35-inch tires and a 1.5-inch lift to the Wrangler to target the Bronco’s available Sasquatch package. But we’ll let the numbers talk for themselves, because we just tested the Wrangler 392 with the Xtreme Recon package and it should make the upcoming high-performance Bronco Raptor nervous.
In our testing, the 5259-pound Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 reached 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, 0.5 second quicker than Jeep’s claim. That’s 0.3 second quicker than a 480-hp Ford Mustang Mach 1 with a six-speed manual transmission that weighed nearly 1500 pounds less. The quickest Ford Bronco we’ve tested was a two-door Sasquatch-equipped First Edition that reached 60 mph in 6.3 seconds with a 330-hp twin-turbo V-6. Our Jeep test car was equipped with the Xtreme Recon package, too, and had 315/70 BFGoodrich K02 all-terrain tires. It raced through the quarter-mile in 12.9 seconds at 104 mph and reached 110 mph in 15.0 seconds. Its top speed is governed at 112 mph.
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is powered by a 6.4-liter (392 cubic inch) V-8 that’s also found in 392 versions of the Dodge Challenger, Charger, and Durango along with the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. It produces 470 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque. Wrangler Rubicon 392 models also have a hood borrowed from the Gladiator Mojave with “392” badging and a quad-tip exhaust system.
